The Toyota RAV4 EV, the only all-electric SUV available anywhere in the United States, this month reached the conclusion of its limited production run. According to, all 2,600 planned models of the vehicle have been produced and shipped, with only approximately 300 units remaining to be sold or leased.

Revisiting How Much Electric Car Range Is Enough: Maybe 120 Miles?

A gas-powered car with a full tank of petrol can commonly travel 300 miles before requiring a fill-up. Drivers of those vehicles probably don’t see much difference between an electric car that has 80 miles of range—versus one that can go 120 miles before needing to fill-up. But that difference, I have learned in the past two weeks, is huge. That’s because I recently leased a 2014 Toyota RAV4 EV—when the three-year lease on my 2011 Nissan LEAF came to an end.

A battery-electric plug-in vehicle is the top green car to own, according to the Auto Club of Southern California. The Toyota RAV4 EV topped the list in the Club’s “2013 Green Car Guide: Plugged Into the Future,” published yesterday. Hybrids took nine out of the top ten slots, however.

Somebody Please Explain Why the RAV4 EV Isn’t a Big Hit

As previously reported, Toyota is offering dramatic discounts on the RAV4 EV all-electric crossover SUV. Sales of the vehicle have been meager, so the implied message is that consumers aren’t interested in the RAV4 EV. A few weeks ago, I drove the car again—through a one-week loan from Toyota—and I was just as blown away as my two previous times behind the wheel. Frankly, I don’t understand why the RAV4 EV isn’t the most sought-after EV on the market.

RAV4 EV Owner Contemplates Future of the Car

My fellow owners of the RAV4 EV occasionally discuss how much money the electric vehicle costs Toyota to sell in California. If Toyota wants to continue selling cars in California, the company must either sell 2,600 cars through 2014—to earn California Air Resources Board - Zero Emission Vehicle (CARB-ZEV) credits—or buy credits on the open market. But is it cheaper for Toyota to cut its losses now, and just buy credits instead of delivering more RAV4 EVs?

Canada to Mexico Electric Car Rally Changes EV Range Perceptions

There have been a number of long-distance electric car events held to counter perceptions about range limitations of EVs. The latest was last week's BC2BC-2013 Rally, in which eight electric cars and one electric motorcycle traveled from British Columbia to Baja, California. All but one successfully arrived, although the journey revealed weaknesses in electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Four Normal-Looking Electric Cars Worth Considering

The 2013 Nissan LEAF might be the world’s best-selling electric car, but it’s hardly what you’d call a regular-looking car. In fact, with its bulbous headlights and accentuated rear, the LEAF—just like the Mitsubishi i and Toyota Prius—screams for attention as an eco-mobile. Many electric car drivers—including myself—love the LEAF’s unconventional design. But if you want to drive an electric car that looks "normal" however, consider these four all-electric cars that might even be mistaken for their gas-powered siblings.
