Mitsubishi Clones Electric i-MiEV for Global Partners

By · June 23, 2010

If the all-electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV looks a lot like the Peugeot ion or the Citroën C-Zero, there’s a reason. Mitsubishi will build a total of 100,000 i-MiEVs for the French automakers, which will rebrand the plug-in minicar when sold in Europe later this year.

Utilizing the i-MiEV for its electric offering, rather than building from scratch, is allowing PSA Peugeot-Citroën to offer the first mass-market electric car in Europe. Yet, according to Automobile Magazine, Mitsubishi will have to ramp up battery production to make is sure it can deliver not only the Peugeot-Citroën vehicles, but its own plans to sell 30,000 i-MiEVs annually by 2013.

As we’ve reported, the price of the i-MiEV is a moving target—somewhere between $25,000 and $50,000 depending on when and where you buy. The C-Zero and iOn, which are scheduled for production in October, will be about $40,000, minus a $7,000 French subsidy.

But even before those variations of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV go on sale in France, one more flavor of i-MiEV is expected—this one from Japan’s Mitsuoka Motor Co. In this iteration, the i-MiEV is stretched by about seven inches and turned into a 5-seater. (The plain vanilla i-MiEV seats four.) Moreover, the name is to “Like”—and exterior design flourishes are added. Mitsouka Motor also adds a few thousands dollars to the price, bringing it to about $35,000 after Japanese tax breaks.

Time will well if Mitsubishi signs more deals to put additional i-MiEV on global roads under various names.
