Volvo CEO: Plug-in Hybrids Will Be Bigger Than Pure Electric Cars

Volvo has been slow to jump onto the vehicle electrification bandwagon, but that is about to end. The Swedish automaker is showing a plug-in hybrid electric concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.Why did Volvo chose a PHEV as its first electrified model rather than a pure electric vehicle? “Pure electric is going to be, in my view, a very small part of the market," Maloney told PluginCars.com. "I don’t think people want a car that has compromises.”

Volvo Prices V60 Diesel Plug-in Hybrid Wagon for Europe

Volvo describes its V60 diesel plug-in hybrid as its most technically advanced vehicle ever and refers to the plug-in wagon as the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid. It's electric, hybrid and muscle car "all rolled into one." Selling north of $75,000 in Europe, we now have a hint that Volvo's plug-in hybrid coming to the United States will be impressive, but quite pricey.

Volvo Unveils Plug-in Hybrid Diesel V60: 124 MPG, 30 Electric Miles, AWD, 0-60 in 6.9 Sec

Ahead of next week's Geneva Motor Show Volvo has taken the wraps off its latest plug-in project, the V60 PHEV. Calling it "three cars in one," Volvo has included just about everything but the kitchen sink for next generation car enthusiasts: an all-electric range of 30 miles using a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery, 124 mpg when driving in hybrid mode, a 2.4 liter turbocharged diesel engine, all-wheel drive using the electric motor for the rear wheels and the diesel engine for the front wheels, and a sport mode that combines both power sources for maximum performance resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 6.9 seconds.

Volvo Moves Forward with Plug-in Hybrid Sports Wagon

Volvo announced yesterday that it will unveil its V60 plug-in sports wagon at the Geneva International Motor Show in March. The car will combine a five-cylinder 2.4-liter D5 turbodiesel engine (powering the front wheels,) with Volvo's new Electric Rear Axle Drive system, which consists of a 70 hp electric motor drawing from a 12 kWh lithium ion battery pack. When you add this to previous announcements from Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby, a Volvo plug-in hybrid in the U.S. starts looking real.

Volvo Reports Reactions from First Drivers of Volvo V70 Plug-in Hybrid

Volvo has been among the quietest of car companies planning to offer a plug-in hybrid. But behind the scene, the company has been evaluating the Volvo V70 Plug-in Hybrid by giving the wagon to ordinary families to use for a few weeks at a time. Among the findings: the families want more all-electric range, public charging wasn't used, and the quietness of the EV-drive was not a threat to pedestrians.
