Volkswagen Settles on Standard Electric Car Battery, From China

Volkswagen will use the same battery module design for all its electric vehicles globally across all its brands, according to Dr. Tobias Giebel, head of the Volkswagen Research Lab in Shanghai. In an interview with PluginCars.com, Giebel said Volkswagen is working with local battery manufacturers in China to produce a product that meets Volkswagen’s global standards. “We believe the future of battery cell sourcing is in China,” he said.

Volkswagen Tests Electric Compact Van Concept with Elektro Caddy

Volkswagen may see things differently than competitors like Ford and Renault. The electric Ford Transit Connect is the first electric Ford on the market, and Renault expects to sell tens of thousands of its electric Kangoos. Ford and Renault both believe there is a market for electric compact utility vehicles, but I don't see any indication Volkswagen has the same belief.

Electric Volkswagen Microbus Becomes Reality in New Concept

Unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show today, Volkswagen's new Bulli concept revives the Microbus in modern form and stuffs it full of batteries to turn it into an all-electric vehicle with a stated 186 mile range. On the surface it's an exciting concept that's very close to something I've been audibly pining for with the German carmaker. But it also feels like a bit of a miss.

First Drive: Volkswagen Electric Golf Has Innovative Features

During the U.S. Media Launch for the Volkswagen E-Golf (officially called the Golf blue-e-motion) in Wolfsburg, Germany, PluginCars.com was given an opportunity to take a prototype of the car on a short drive. It's a solid prototype with lots of potential and some truly innovative features, but VW's strategy is hard to understand.
