Toyota Says Discounts Are Necessary to Sell Its Plug-Ins

Toyota Division Group Vice President Bill Fay told Wards Auto that dealership incentives on the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will continue to be necessary for the company to keep pace with last year’s sales figures. The automaker sold 12,750 Prius PHEVs in 2012. “I don’t know that we have to necessarily go around and match everybody,” he said, referring to Toyota discounts intended to make plug-in cars competitive with gas-powered vehicles. “But we have to be sure we offer the same kind of value when they go to buy the vehicle.”

Sales of Plug-in Hybrids Eclipse Pure EVs in November

With sales of 1,766 units, the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid topped the sales chart in the plug-in segment in November. When you add sales of the Chevy Volt, and the first purchases of the C-Max Energi, the popularity of plug-in hybrids—over pure electric cars like the Nissan LEAF—become very evident.

Slow Uptake on Green Carpool Stickers for Plug-in Hybrids

Fewer than 4,000 of California’s green carpool lane stickers—targeted to promote sales of plug-in hybrids—have been issued so far, according to figures from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. As of Aug. 3, the state had issued 2,643 decals to Prius Plug-In owners and 1,114 to Volt owners, according to a report in North County Times.

Government Awards Only 4 Stars to Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid

Shortly after launching in the US, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) put the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid through its official set of crash tests. The results show that the Prius Plug-in Hybrid managed an overall rating of only four stars. While that seems decent, the standard Prius liftback is five-star rated by the NHTSA.

Toyota's recent sales breakdown shows that 4,700-plus Prius Plug-in Hybrids were sold in Japan prior to May 1 and that its "overseas" total hit 2,500 on April 30.
