Nissan LEAF Ordering Starts Today, "Minor Hiccups" Overcome

Nick Chambers · Nick Chambers · 1 year ago

If you've been waiting for the Nissan LEAF for the better part of three years, today might just be the day you get to satisfy your longstanding car-crush. A small group of LEAF reservation holders in the five initial launch markets of Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona and Tennessee will finally be able to request a quote from a local dealer and get their place in line. And, even if you can't order today, rest assured that you'll be able to order soon if you live in one of those launch markets.

I decided quite some time ago that if I was going to be an advocate for plug-in cars, I should put my money where my mouth is and get one. So, last April, like so many thousands of others, I put my $99 down to get a spot on the reservations list. A few months ago I paid another $99 to have AeroVironment come to my house and do a home charging station pre-installation inspection. And today, I was one of the lucky few to get an email from Nissan saying I could start the ordering process.

So I diligently clicked on the emailed link and was redirected to my account on the Nissan LEAF website all ready to get the ball rolling... only to have my balloon deflated in a whimpering hiss. Apparently Nissan was having a couple of "minor hiccups," as Katherine Zachary, Nissan's manager of corporate communications told me in a quick note. Although the email from Nissan told me I could start the process, my online account was in somewhat of a different mood. With assurance that the hiccup could be fixed quickly, I waited an hour and, indeed, the problem was fixed.

It seems that the few extra days Nissan took to start the ordering process to make sure that it went off hitch free, didn't get rid of all the potential hitches. In any event I now have my order completed for a tricked out LEAF SL and am waiting on my local dealer to get back to me with a quote, which Nissan says will happen within 24 hours.

I've attached all the screenshots I took of the ordering process, including descriptions of every accessory and option. Some of the ones I went for include the $700 DC fast charge port (because you can't install it after you order the car), the floor mats (really, why are these always optional now?), and the "eco design package"—which includes a "unique" center console applique, blue interior accents, exterior "zero emissions" graphics, and Nissan LEAF holographic door kick plates... to exclaim my plug-in geekiness for all the world to see.

Grand total for all of that as estimated by the website $34,850. We'll see if I can't get my dealer to budge on that somewhat.

Other options that come up during the ordering process included choosing if you want to lease, finance or pay cash for the car, and whether you want to roll the charging station installation costs into the lease or finance costs. What wasn't fully clear was how you would tell the system if you wanted to forego the charging station installation altogether, but I'm guessing that's something you have to take up with your dealer.

So there you go, with the exception of some minor glitches, a rather uneventful end to my wait. Any of you other readers out there able to order your LEAF today?

My order was taken by the website at 2:12 pm today BUT I had to get their phone customer service to over-ride the hiccup of my refusing to get the "home assessment." I had called their customer service several times and even their charge point installation service to give them notice that i was not going to get my home charger through their channel, BUT all of my prior efforts were for naught. After my first call at 11:15 am there was a "promise" to "escalate a followup" on this glitch, but after 3 hours nothing had changed so I called again and insisted on talking to the customer service manager (Yvonne) that I had spoken with a couple of times earlier in this whole process. Yvonne was busy, but authorized the agent directly speaking with me to go ahead and over-ride the website holdup and move me to the "assessment waiver section." After completing the waiver requirements, THEN my ordering details went quite smoothly...

I am waiving the Nissan home charge system, as we are taking delivery of one of the first Chevrolet VOLT vehicles to come to Northern California and in the Sacramento region early VOLT buyers will be eligible for federally funded home charge points (which are universal for any of the new EVs).

Oooh... a Volt and a LEAF George! I am envious. Thanks for the update on the home charger waiver issues, too bad that it's a rigmarole.

End to your wait, Nick? Seems to me that the wait has now officially just begun!

Now if they would just get it together so the rest of us could test drive the car. I can't see people spending money on a car they haven't driven. I asked Nissan the other day when test drives would be happening and all they could say was that they would let people know when the car would be in my area sometime in Sept. and that only a limit number of spots would be available. What? They need to get the car to dealers so those of us who aren't bloggers can drive this thing.

I also had to call Nissan for the home charger waiver before I could complete my order. Now waiting for Nissan to help the dealer "expert" figure out how to give me the Cal $5,000 credit for leasing the vehicle. The dealer has to call Nissan to figure it out!!!

CT -

Agreed! I bought my Rav4EV without so much as a test drive... since they couldn't keep one on the lot. Fortunately I had several friends who'd already purchased theirs, and I knew all about the car (since it had existed in fleets for so many years already). Amazing that they have no plans to have a "tester" handy for everybody. But that'll probably come when they finally need to start convincing the general public that they want this car. At this point, the people who want them already know they want them, I guess.

Test drive?

I think they have a waiting list several years long of people waiting to buy the car right now without a test drive? I wish they would be able to produce enough cars so that they could start doing test drives.

Sorry to mention it but Aeroviroment is a war profiteer and makes drones to fight the wars abroad. Nissan needs to offer an alternative to this greenwashing.

· darelldd · 1 year ago

Well, I guess using the same logic... Nissan also supports various wars as well since the company mostly sells gasoline cars that use gobs of imported oil that we must protect with those drones!

CT, Darrell, Dutch: My understanding is that Nissan still plans on making the LEAFs available to test drive before anybody needs to make a final decision about buying the car. Last time I heard, they were going to do another tour of the U.S. in the fall, this time with some of the first cars off the production line in Yokohama, where LEAF production begins this month.

Anonymous: AeroVironment is a much more diverse company than your simple statement gives them credit for. Yes, they do make drones for the U.S. military, but they don't make the ones that most people are thinking of (i.e. the raptor and other self-guided bomb-droppers). They make the small autonomous drones that can be stored in backpacks and taken out in the field to be launched to do aerial reconnaissance. Whether you agree with the war or not, AeroVironment's products help keep our troops safer.

Yet, even so, AeroVironment has a long and storied history beyond their current drone and Nissan LEAF deal. They were instrumental in developing the GM Impact, which led to the EV1, as well as all of its charging equipment back in the 90s. They also were the first to build a human powered airplane in the 70s (the Gossamer Condor) which made the first human-powered flight across the English channel. They built the much storied Solar Challenger which holds the record for longest and highest manned solar powered flight. They also built the Sunraycer, which won the first solar race, as many likely remember.

So, I wouldn't say it's greenwashing. There are some legitimate concerns about how expensive the home charging installation is for what you get, but that's why it's good that Nissan is allowing you to forego the AV installation and get your own contractor and supplier.

· abasile · 1 year ago

I have absolutely no problem with AeroViroment selling to the military, and am proud to support our troops. (I do, however, hope to reduce the need for future military involvement in the Middle East by avoiding the use of petroleum imports.)

My only issue with AV is their high prices for charger installs. Would-be LEAF purchasers should not be dissuaded by this, though, as there are and will be other, better, cheaper charger options. You don't have to go with AV.

Mike, California's Clean Vehicle Rebate Program will provide a cash rebate for the LEAF after it's purchased, not a credit at the time of lease or sale. The consumer may apply for the rebate as soon as they have executed the lease or purchase agreement and have documentation of temporary or permanent registration and proof of residency. For more information on application requirements, see the following website: http://energycenter.org/index.php/incentive-programs/clean-vehicle-rebat.... Enjoy your LEAF!

I understand the frustration of the ordering process, but want to give everyone a reality check. This is the world's 4th largest auto maker and they are bringing an EV to market - for sale!

Take a breath, absorb that statement. If you need to go back and re-watch "Who Killed the Electric Car?", do so. But let's keep in mind how very cool it is that GM and Nissan are actually going to sell these cars by the thousands in just a few short months. The work over the past decade to make this happen was often frustrating and rarely satisfying. Now, it is fun as hell!

Please work with all the companies getting these cars out to market and understand that they are working as hard as they can to make the process a smooth one. There will be problems, but not nearly of the scale we encountered in 2003.

Full disclosure - I'm starting my new job being a paid hack for Nissan in about one week:~)

It's exciting - even if it's just the beginning of the wait. I've been on the reservation list in Maryland since April 20th and our order period is still a ways off.

In 2003 I bought a Honda Civic hybrid - not what I wanted but a step closer. Friends didn't understand why given the cost and predicted hybrids would never catch on - today in a middle lane of the highway I'm surrounded by them on an average drive. Between all the first timer tax incentives and roller coaster gas I won on cost too. Still runs like a top at 135K, batteries fine, but will be needing a catalytic converter soon.

Guess what - my next car will never need THAT repair.

Now, again, we are going to make history by simply lining up and showing there is demand for a cleaner solution. Putting our money where the future is. Finally I believe big oil and old line auto companies won't be able to stop it. I predict again we'll win on cost, just like before, but that's secondary to making choices available for my kids.

I think Paul's right - time to get out "Who killed The Electric Car" and show it to my boys while we wait.

Don't get me wrong though - I think the Volt is cool too. That's the bridge for folks who have range issues or one car families. Some nice photos of the Volt assembly line here:
