Mitsubishi Will Launch Outlander Plug-in Hybrid in December

It’s been nearly five years since Mitsubishi announced that its Outlander Plug-in Hybrid will soon go on sale. But now, after repeated delays and recalls, the company says it will finally introduce the plug-in SUV later this year. The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid is expected to arrive in dealerships in December 2017. The base price for the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid will be $34,595—establishing the vehicle as by far the most affordable plug-in SUV on the market.

Mitsubishi Promises More Plug-in Models, Again

It’s reasonable to doubt that Mitsubishi will fulfill any announced plans for upcoming plug-in electric vehicles. After all, the past couple of years have been characterized by unconvincing EVs, product delays and a scandal involving systematic misreporting of fuel efficiency numbers. And yet, there is news of new upcoming plug-in vehicles from Mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi Kills i-MiEV Small Electric Car, Prepares Plug-in SUVs

Mitsubishi announced last month it will no longer sell its i-MiEV electric hatchback in the United States, ending a five-year run characterized mostly by disappointing sales. The company promises that eventually its SUV platforms will house plug-in hybrid or EV powertrains.

Mitsubishi Is Quiet on Its Floundering Electric Car Plans

While many automakers are issuing ambitious launch schedules for assorted plug-in electric vehicle models, Mitsubishi Motors is struggling to figure out what it wants to do. In fact, PluginCars.com would like to give our readers an update on where Mitsu’s EV program in going—but the Japanese automaker won’t be able to provide that info until late fall, according to Mitsubishi Motors North America spokesman Roger Yasukawa.

Mitsubishi Plagued By Faults, Recalls Japanese Plug-in Cars

Mitsubishi is officially recalling its Japanese-market 2013 Outlander plug-in crossover SUV, as well as various i-MiEV electric subcompact models. This follows Mitsubishi suspending shipments of the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid in March, after shipping about 4,000 units of the plug-in Outlander, and 68 i-MiEV vehicles fitted with potentially faulty batteries. The sustained bad news only serves to undermine confidence in Mitsubishi's plug-in vehicles.

Mitsubishi Reports Overheated Battery in Outlander Plug-in Hybrid

Mitsubishi Motors yesterday asked customers not to charge the plug-in hybrid Outlander Plug-in Hybrid after a lithium-ion battery overheated last week, melting the cell and part of the battery pack. In a separate incident, a battery caught fire while being tested at a company factory. Even though no injuries have been reported, and the cause of the incidents is unknown, reports of potential safety issues raise concerns among all EV stakeholders.

Hints about Pricing and MPG for Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid

Mitsubishi Motors U.K. last week launched the new Outlander crossover SUV, promising that the forthcoming plug-in hybrid version will arrive in the U.K. by June. The European Commission has not yet issued official pricing or fuel economy numbers, but Lance Bradley, Mitsubishi Motors U.K. managing director, said he expected around 150 miles per gallon, and that pricing would be "highly competitive."

Mitsubishi Pins EV Hopes on Outlander Plug-in Hybrid

Mitsubishi’s U.K. division believes the upcoming Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV will be the company’s most important car sold in decades, according to U.K.’s Car Dealer magazine. In an article posted today, the magazine quoted Toby Marshall, Mitsubishi sales and marketing director, saying, “We can sell as many as we want.” This is not the first time Mitsubishi has pinned big hopes on plug-in cars—which have not yet materialized.
