Honda Cancels Plug-in Accord, But Plans New EV

Honda announced on Monday that it would no longer offer the plug-in version of its Accord mid-size sedan. The plug-in model was never a big-seller, averaging about 40 units per month for 2013 and 2014—before sales plummeted to five sales per month since March. Yet, company executives promised a new purpose-built plug-in hybrid and EV model.

Today, Honda officially launches its 2014 Accord Plug-in Hybrid in both New York and California. With this launch, Honda enters the growing plug-in hybrid vehicle market in the United States.

With 2013 Honda Accord, Plug-in Option Hits Mainstream Model

Honda celebrated a banner sales month in December. In fact, 2012 was American Honda's fourth-best sales year ever, and its best sales result since 2008. This could be a good thing for plug-in cars because the company will begin selling the Accord Plug-in Hybrid in California and New York on January 15. The Accord will become the most popular passenger vehicle platform yet to offer a plug-in option.

First Drive: Honda’s Plug-in Hybrid Takes On Volt and Prius

Nearly all the media attention in the plug-in car world goes to pure electric vehicles, while plug-in hybrids mostly escape notice. That was true during the press days at last week’s 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, and during the media unveiling by Honda of its new powertrains prior to the show. The Honda Fit EV, as I reported on Monday, deserves a spotlight—based purely on the impressive amount of acceleration it delivers. But after five minutes behind the wheel of Honda’s Accord-sized plug-in hybrid, I believe it could be the breakthrough electrified vehicle that Honda needs.

A Few More Details about Honda’s Upcoming Plug-in Hybrid

Honda announced at last year’s L.A. auto show that it make and sell an all-electric Honda Fit, as well as a full-size sedan using plug-in hybrid technology. The Fit should make a fantastic platform for a pure EV, but we haven’t had many details about what the plug-in hybrid will look like, or its features. This week’s Automotive News fills in a few of those blanks, while leaving lots of questions unanswered.
