Ford C-MAX Energi to Feature 20 Miles of Electric-Only Range

Ford announced that its first plug-in hybrid, the 2013 Ford C-MAX Energi, will deliver 20-plus miles of electric-only range, and offer 550 miles of total range.

Most Important Plug-in Hybrid Metric: MPG When Batteries Are Depleted

In 2011, the Chevy Volt was the only plug-in hybrid on the market—but that’s going to change in 2012. The field of cars that combine grid-supplied electricity for a number of electric miles—with gas-powered energy to extend driving range—will expand with the introduction of the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Fisker Karma and Ford C-Max Energi. The statistic most cited for these cars is all-electric range (AER). But the standard by which consumers judge plug-in hybrids could be the efficiency of the vehicle when its batteries are depleted.

Ford Chairman Sees Convergence of Connectivity and Electric Driving

At the Intelligent Transportation Systems World Congress (ITS) in Orlando Florida in October, Ford Motor Company chairman Bill Ford proclaimed that it’s time for the auto industry to snatch the phrase “Information Superhighway” away from the IT industry. Ford has a vision for a world where cars “talk” to one another to avoid accidents, run more on electricity, and even monitor the health of their drivers.

Ford Unveils World's First Plug-in Hybrid Microvan, Completes Perfect Next-Gen Garage

Based on the just-unveiled C-Max platform that Ford is bringing to the U.S. as it prepares to re-enter the minivan market in 2012, the C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will join a conventional gas version, a fuel-efficient, turbocharged EcoBoost version, and a conventional hybrid version that Ford announced in conjunction with the plug-in hybrid announcement. Given all those platform choices, when the C-Max goes on sale in 2012 it will offer consumers more choice in drivetrain than any other vehicle on the planet.
