Fisker Karma Production Delayed by Faulty Components

Fisker Karma production delayed by fault components and flood-damaged leather.

Despite numerous setbacks, Fisker Automotive claims that it's still on track to manufacture 15,000 of its plug-in hybrid Fisker Karma sedans in 2012.

Production of Fisker's plug-in Karma was delayed by faulty electrical harnesses, headlights and flood-damaged leather, according to Fisker chairman Ray Lane. This counters Fisker's previous claims that US and state regulatory agencies were taking longer than expected to certify the Karma as road legal. In an interview with Reuters, Lane stated, "In production of a first vehicle, everything doesn't go the way you plan. Next year, we'll do exactly what we plan."

Furthermore, Lane told Reuters that Fisker would only deliver 1,500 Karma sedans in 2011, which is significantly less than the 7,000 Karmas the automaker promised it would sell this year when it kicked off production of the Karma in Finland back in March. Fisker is currently manufacturing approximately 150 Karmas per week, according to Lane. Lane wraps up the interview by stating that Fisker's goal of producing 15,000 Karma sedans in 2012 remains 100-percent intact.

In a later update, Lane said that what he meant by "full production" next year would be more like 10 to 12 thousand vehicles, not the 15k reporters were assuming.

It is of course no surprise that with all the delays, they will not make that many this year, despite the full order book. Apparently the plant is currently producing 150 per week. At 600 per month you get at most 1800 in three months (Oct, Nov, Dec). Presumably they are ramping up, since they did not get 600 completed in Oct either.

At the moment they are having problems with some of the paints (production batches not up to snuff), so black, white, and sliver cars are being delivered, but not the other colors, yet.
