Contest: What's Your One-Liner on Plug-In Vehicles? (Update: One Day Left!)

By · November 10, 2011

Treasure Island in Bay Area

Come up with a brilliant one-liner about plug-in cars, and get VIP tickets to Plug In America's Gala Event on Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay.

Update: The contest is now closed. Check out the winners.

The creation of a mass movement of plug-in car drivers involves convincing one driver at a time to give electricity a chance. That means finding the right messages, and delivering them in a persuasive way. Here's your chance in the next seven days to devise a memorable pitch—for plug-in cars or just for plug-in hybrids—and an opportunity to win a prize.

If you come up with something "insanely great," you could see your words all over, and contribute significantly to the success of the campaign for vehicle electrification.

We invite our readers to think about your best "one-liner" about PEVs. Your concise single sentence can be a:

  • compelling statement of their social benefits
  • catchy and memorable slogan
  • heartfelt story of your longing for one
  • snapshot of a comment you got while in your PEV
  • joke (e.g., how many drivers does it take to plug in...?)
  • if you're a creative type, point to a URL for your art/photo/song

CalCars had a few false starts, but we eventually came up with "100+MPG" and "Cleaner/Cheaper/Domestic." It’s time to amp up our one-liners to deliver an even more powerful message.

Very Cool Prize

A lucky winner will get two VIP tickets to Plug In America's Annual Gala event, Sunday, November 13 at the ultra-scenic Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. VIPs get a 3 PM pre-event with test-drives of not-yet-out electric vehicles. Details at http://action.pluginamerica.org/content_item/gala. (Those tickets are valued at $240 each.)

CalCars is a long-time supporter of Plug In America and the other groups working to promote PEVs, many listed at http://www.calcars.org/partners.html. You can also buy general tickets for events starting at 4:30: food and drink, raffles, etc. for $120 at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/206361.

If you don't live nearby, of course you can transfer your tickets to a friend. Or PIA will send you a DVD of "Who Killed the Electric Car," a tote bag, and a copy of its 2012 Plug-In Car guide when released.

I will judge the winners, along with Brad Berman, founder and editor PluginCars.com. You may also know him for his years at HybridCars.com or see his automotive journalism at The New York Times.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 11 at noon Pacific Time. Post your submissions in the comments field below. If you don't feel inspired, check in here and maybe you'll get some ideas. And by all means, spread the word about this contest.

Update: The contest is now closed. Check out the winners.

· A.C. (not verified) · 3 years ago

I wonder if it's ok to explain the story of the one liner (like maybe it's a commercial, or maybe some pictures behind it). If so, here's my take on

- Zero Gas, Zero Regret
A picture/drawing of a plug-in EV under the Zero Gas portion of the slogan, and a picture/drawing of environment & war casualties (for petroleum) under Zero Regret.

- Twinkle Twinkle Little Spark, plug-in vehicle is just a start.
Maybe a 10-30 sec commercial kind of slogan. Video starts playing with a baby in its crib, and one of those hanging toys playing "Twinkle, twinkle little spark..." music, then shows dad or mom coming back home in a EV, drive into the garage, and plug-in to recharge. Then come and look at the baby. Then white fade out into baby's dream, who shows the baby, now 6 years old, holding the parents hands, walking back to their vehicle - the same EV that was parked in the garage, 6 years ago - that is parked at a parking lot of a national park, charging at a QC station over there. Dad or mom then unplug the vehicle, get onto the car and drive off (and say "time to go home now.").
If it's a cardboard thing commercial, then show drawing of a baby sleeping in a crib on the left side, and drawing of a family holding hands walking into a park with the sun in front of them.

Electric Vehicles: The Best Cars, The Brightest Future.

I'll throw out one with a visual reference. It's a lampoon of the 1980s era anti-drug TV commercial campaign, where the "your brain on drugs" line is juxtaposed with the visual of an egg sizzling away frantically in a frying pan. Here's the original TV spot for a frame of reference . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl5gBJGnaXs

"This is your car." (visual of an old clunker sitting in a dirty parking lot, with the starter motor hopelessly cranking away.)

"This is your car on gasoline." (visual of the car finally starting, belching smoke and with the engine generally making horrendous noises.)

Followed the ubiquitous announcer tag line . . .

"Any questions?"

Show pictures of cars throughout history along with oil production facilities. Then just state this:

In the 20's they got the crank out.

In the 70's they got the lead out.

Its now time to take the gas out.

"I pay for electricity $1.37 per 25 miles"

25 miles per gallon is today's average for a gas car.
People know how much a gallon of gas cost today - $3.50 on average.
So they can quickly see how much less expensive it is to drive an electric car. It will make them think.

After shopping with my wife (only looking could not afford anything their) more people were looking at the Volt then the R8. Pretty ironic in such a status driven area.

"Now that I drive electric, all my sorrows have gone away."

OK, wait! That's not it. I was just testing the internet. That's not my real submission.

OK here:

"If you don't dump your gas car now and get a plugin car we may all die! So do it!"

Maybe they won't believe me. Don't use that one. How about:

"Chicks really dig plugin electric cars cause it makes them think I'm smart and cool. It hypnotizes them!"

Maybe too sexist. Even though it's true. Maybe:

"I have way more high quality friends now that I drive electric. Some are runway models!"

Or just:

"My plugin car is way more fun than your old tech gas car can ever be. You should get one and move up!"

Oh, let me sleep on it.

This basically covers the literal propulsion angle while also alluding to the green angle, the frugal angle, the the get off oil angle, etc. A choice to purchase an EV or plug-in hybrid may be motivated by many considerations ranked in different order for each individual...this sort of puts them all under the same umbrella.

"Set US free, Buy an EV"

Commentary: Automobiles in America have traditionally been a prominent symbol of American Freedom. For the past several decades, automobiles represent dependence on oil and the sacrifice of American lives to secure a stable oil supply. America's consumption of oil can no longer be separated from the sacrifice of human lives in the Middle East. Ironically, it now takes Nissan, a foreign automaker, leading the way to help restore the connection between cars and freedom. I hope those folks at GM and Chevy can get fully on board to restore that long lost connection between the feeling of independence and cars. The very cars we once felt liberated us, now enslave us. Unless we rethink our notions of energy freedom, "dying for oil" will be the American Legacy.

Drive electric, because oil is too valuable to burn.

Background: Look around, oil and oil-derived products are everywhere, oil is essential to our way of life, and we shouldn't waste it by burning it for energy.

· Electric Driver (not verified) · 3 years ago

Clean, green and less obscene.

Clean, green, no gasoline.

Every year my electric car saves me money, cuts pollution and supports American power and jobs.

Live free, drive electric.

Breathe. Drive electric.

Oil is a dirty business. Drive electric.

With just the electricity it takes to refine and ship a gallon of gas, my electric car can go ** miles. For the cost of the pollution created by refining and shipping that gas, my electric car can go another ** miles. Skip the gas and drive electric.

The best investment is to drive electric:

My electric car is cleaner than a gas car now, even taking into account pollution from power plants. As we clean up our power plants and add more renewable generation, my electric car magically becomes even cleaner. Meanwhile a gas-burning car never gets cleaner, and may even become dirtier as components age. The best investment is to drive electric.

Renewable electricity is getting cheaper every year and comes from sources that will never run out. You can even put solar panels on your roof and offset your electric car's energy use with simple, free sunshine. By contrast, gasoline is getting more expensive every year and we have a finite supply of fossil fuels. The best investment is to drive electric.

A typical gasoline engine will run for a few hundred thousand miles at best, with major repairs needed along the way, periodic oil changes, tuneups, and belt/hose/spark plug/exhaust system replacements. By contrast, a typical electric motor will run for a million miles or more with no major maintenance, no tuneups, no oil changes, no belts, hoses, spark plugs or exhaust systems. The best investment is to drive electric.

A gasoline engine has a narrow range of torque, requiring a complex and expensive multi-speed transmission - which will eventually need to be repaired or replaced. An electric motor has instant torque from zero to top speed without the need for a complex multi-speed transmission. The best investment is to drive electric.

How much is your time worth? Why waste it at a stinky gas station breathing fumes and emptying your wallet? Simply plug in at night (like a cell phone) and wake up with a full charge every morning, ready to go. Save money and your valuable time. The best investment is to drive electric.

Simpler, cleaner and more efficient. Patriotic, powerful and fun. More durable, lower running costs, and a better long term investment. The electric car. Drive and thrive.

Think about it, every neighborhood could have a community solar charging station. Everyone cold chip in and buy the panels in bulk to reduce cost and in turn could charge their EV for free. Better yet, how about neighborhood EV sharing, so that the cost of EV ownership could be spread out.

Plug in, Pay less.

That's the message car buyers most want to hear. They want to believe it about plug-in cars, but they don't have the info. We can give it to them in detail, or in shorthand: Plug in, Pay less.

A Sept. 8, 2011 article in Bloomberg Businessweek does a good job of showing how total cost of ownership favors electric-drive vehicles, and that's without counting any state incentives that might be available, such as California's $2,500 rebate for the Leaf. See http://www.businessweek.com/innovation/the-cleantech-threshold-09082011.... Plug in, Pay less.

Two presentations and a focus group video at the Nov. 2, 2011 "EV Roadmap" conference (http://bit.ly/uHHHOt) in Portland, Ore. support "Plug in, Pay less" for the new slogan. Plug In America board member Chad Schwitters reports:

"NRG Energy and Nissan both showed data indicating that around 75% of buyers indicate cost savings as a primary reason for buying an EV (and that’s just consumers; the number seems higher for fleets). One of them went on to say that U.S. interests was a distant second at about 40%, and the environment was third at 15%. (Totals more than 100%, so probably they could check all that apply.) ... Perhaps in our outreach we should push harder on operating costs, since that is still a surprise to many. This was driven home by a real-time focus group video feed; the group had very little idea of costs, and generally speculated that EVs might be more expensive than gas cars, so they would wait until they were sure costs were lower. They did get that TCO was important, and not just initial cost."

Plug in, Pay less.

Not to mention the steep price paid by individuals and society for our reliance on oil, sending our money overseas to import oil, fighting wars over oil, the environmental destruction of oil drilling and processing, the health effects of car exhaust, etc. etc. etc.

Plug in, Pay less.

Don't toil for oil, thrive on electric drive !

· TEG (not verified) · 3 years ago

Compared to electric motor motion, internal combustion is very wasteful: it wastes most of the power as heat and friction when exploding fuel in the engine; much fuel was used to transport fuel to you; and much energy was used to extract oil from the ground and then refine it into automotive fuel.

I do not think that there could be one line. There are so many good reasons for plug-in cars. It is impossible to put them into one line or compress them. Like "Cleaner/Cheaper/Domestic" lists three reason but it does not make people think. I think that there should several lines - one for each good reason. Then each driver can choose which one to put up - thus we can make a greater impact.

Sherry beat me to it! Paying less is the main reason I'm switching to PEV. Here's my twist though:

"Drive more, Save more: Plug-in."

Save what? Save money (way lower "fuel" and lower maintenance cost). Save lives (reduced air pollution = better health). Save our environment (reduced dependency on oil = reduced extraction/transportation/use impact). Save our economy (more jobs from domestic PEV production and PEV supporting infrastructure creation and maintenance). With a PEV you can drive more and still be saving more of everything than you could with an ICE car.

As Al Gore once said, our problems are all interconnected: "We’re borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet."

· TEG (not verified) · 3 years ago

I stayed away from the direct "saves you money" because nay-sayers like to point out the extra premium you pay up front to get this technology. Doing a "life of vehicle" cost/benefits is just too much for a one-liner quick thought. I also would have a bunch of better one-liners if we were talking about 100% "PURE" ZEV / BEV with no range extender, but plugincars.com embraces plug-in hybrids too, so I have to be generic enough to give a nod to the vehicles that are only "partially electrified."
I drive a LEAF, but give some credit to VOLT drivers for the miles they do on electricity.
I have a CA motorcycle license, and live near the event, so it would be fun to go check out other vehicles I might consider someday.

· TEG (not verified) · 3 years ago

I also try to stay away from re-purposing someone's else's slogan, but if we "go there" how about:

"Drives great... less filling !"

I think those "driving gas free: priceless", "plug-in, turn-on, ..." are just too derivative. They make you think of the original slogan / saying too much. Also, "dump the pump" is a nice saying, but already used by Pluginamerica... http://tinyurl.com/6oud4ro

plug in and charge the future!

Dear members of PluginCars,

I am currently joining Climate-KIC, which is a summer school funded by European Union. The aim of the summer school is to develop an innovative business idea that can help to mitigate climate change.

My group's business idea is called "Blow Batt". The idea is to have Supercharging stations for electric cars on highways, in which the energy is generated using wind energy from existing wind farms near highways (So we are going to be partners with the wind farmers).

As you all might know already, it takes approximately 20 minutes for a Supercharger to deliver a half-charge. The reason why we are putting Supercharging stations on highways is so that electric car drivers who are in hurry to get somewhere can charge their cars instantly. The other reason is so that long-journey drivers who are low on battery can charge their cars at Blow Batt.

As I recognize that all of you are members of PluginCars, I am writing you this post to ask if it would be possible for you to help my project by filling in the questionnaire below:

I really appreciate your help!

Thank you
