Coda Web Video Celebrates 'End Dependence Day'

By Zach McDonald · July 03, 2011

Just in time for Fourth of July weekend, Coda Automotive has released a web video encouraging Americans to celebrate “End Dependence Day.” The spot examines different perspectives on what it means to be free and what we are dependent on: namely oil. The Coda electric sedan is scheduled for release late this year.

That is perfect, "End Dependence Day"

Compliments that other movie title I heard recently, "Gas Holes".

Wow. The future is bright with minds like these.

Great idea.. Sadly, I don't see a future for Coda.

Stunning! I wish something like this got repeated airplay on the major networks for months on end. It IS enough to make people actually think.

Maybe I'm out of touch with current culture, but my reaction was different: while the tag line "End Dependence Day" is cute and clever, the whole video strikes me as long, boring, and preachy. It hardly seems the sort of thing to convert "non-believers" into caring about oil use. Rather it will just be a turn-off to that crowd and reinforce stereotypes about the sort of people who do care about such things.

@dgpcolorado: I agree. I like the concept, but I feel the production wasn't coherent enough to really be engaging or impactful to folks who aren't already engaged in the electric car movement. I think there needs to be an overarching "presentation" rather than just a series of seemingly random interview snippets. And, of course, I'd recommend leaving out statements like "...didn't know anything about the point of 4th of July, except the British people, and that we were better than them." ()

It's a bit ironic that a company that imports Chinese cars, wants us to end our dependence on foreign oil imports. Interestingly, our trade deficit with China is three times higher than that with OPEC. Hmm...

Yeah - the 'british people' comment did not do any favours for this video's credibility, but I like it anyway. The whole idea is to get people thinking - like the one where the kitchen utensils and shavers are petrol powered...it tries to change a mindset, to try to alter behaviours. To do this we need to be creative and stimulate the grey matter.

Dependence is not sustainable.

When is 'Sustainability Day'?
