Survey Says: Dealers Are Key To Chevy Volt’s Success

There is a love-hate thing going on between Chevrolet dealers and the Chevy Volt. Some love it because they can offer really great lease deals, and are enamored with the technology. But a smaller number really dislike it. GM needs to find a way to turn more of its dealers on to the Volt, because they will be very important to boosting sales.

Dealerships Still Offering Deep Discounts of Up to $10,000 Off Chevy Volt

Discounts on the Chevy Volt are more than four times the industry's per-vehicle average, according to TrueCar.com estimates, reaching as much as $10,000 per vehicle. The incentives include low-interest financing, cash rebates to buyers, sales bonuses to dealers, and heavily subsidized leases.

Reuters Uses Fuzzy Math to Report on Chevy Volt Profitability

Reuters reported today that General Motors loses “as much as $49,000” for every Chevy Volt that it builds. According to four industry experts contacted by Reuters, the range of per-unit costs falls between $76,000 to $88,000—with another analyst saying that it costs GM “at least” $75,000, if you include development expenses. Fuzzy green car math hasn’t been employed with this level of obfuscation since 2006, when CNW Marketing said that a Hummer was greener than a Toyota Prius.

Chevrolet Volt Sales Hit Monthly Record in August

The Chevrolet Volt is set to achieve a monthly sales record, with more than 2,500 units of the plug-in hybrid having been purchased in August. This tops the Volt’s previous sales record set in March of this year.

Last week, IndyCar driver Marco Andretti put a 2013 Chevy Volt to the test. Andretti wheeled the Volt out onto Woodward Avenue and hit the strip to see whether or not the Volt could complete a lap of the 40-mile Woodward Dream Cruise route without using any gas. Success.

Slow Uptake on Green Carpool Stickers for Plug-in Hybrids

Fewer than 4,000 of California’s green carpool lane stickers—targeted to promote sales of plug-in hybrids—have been issued so far, according to figures from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. As of Aug. 3, the state had issued 2,643 decals to Prius Plug-In owners and 1,114 to Volt owners, according to a report in North County Times.
