Top Two Plug-in Car Sales 46% Up From Last Year, Led by Volt

February sales numbers for the top two plug-in vehicles are in. The figure once again reveal how the vagaries of the market—such as inventories, model year changes and seasonality—can create ups and downs not necessarily reflective of demand, or the long-term viability of a particular car. Nonetheless, the combined tally for the two cars is 46 percent higher than last year at this time.

Volt and LEAF Sales Drop Off in January 2013

January is rarely a strong sales month for automakers in general and both the Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt were no exception to this rule. Volt sales hit a 12-month low and LEAF sales didn't fare well either. Both automakers blame low inventories for the decline in January.

Chevy Volt Sales Sizzling Once More, Nissan LEAF Stays Steady

Sales of the Chevy Volt rebounded dramatically in December with GM reporting it sold 2,633 units. As for YTD results, Volt sales increased by a dramatic 205.8 percent in 2012, compared to 2011. Similarly, the Nissan LEAF had a decent month with sales coming in at 1,489 units, but YTD results weren't nearly as impressive as the Volt.

Volt Sales Simmer in November 2012, LEAF Stays Steady

Sales of the Chevy Volt dropped off in November 2012, with General Motors reporting it sold 1,519 units. That's roughly half the 2,961 units GM sold in October 2012—and more than 1,300 units shy of the 2,851 Volts sold in September 2012. Nissan reported that sales of its electric LEAF checked in at a solid 1,539 units in November, compared to 1,579 in October.

General Electric Purchase of Electric Cars Is Slow Process

Earlier this week, GE has announced it will include 2,000 Ford C-Max Energi plug-ins into a plan to replace roughly half of its 30,000 strong fleet of vehicles with greener, more economically minded alternatives. You might remember, however, that more than two years ago it was the Chevrolet Volt making nearly the same headlines—and guaranteeing Chevy a steady stream of sales—when GE stated it would add 12,000 Volts to its fleet.

Globally, sales of the Nissan LEAF remain a bit above sales of the Chevy Volt and its near-identical siblings, which include the Opel Ampera, Vauxhall Ampera and the Holden Volt.

2013 Chevy Volt Gets Software Update to Avoid Shutdown Issue

General Motors is addressing a problem in the Chevy Volt’s software system that can randomly shut down routine driving. The company is asking owners of about 4,000 Volts from the 2013 model year to bring their cars to dealers for a software upgrade.

Sales of the Chevy Volt remain solid with General Motors reporting it sold 2,851 units in September 2012. Nissan reported that sales of its electric LEAF checked in at a 12-month high of 984 units in September 2012, compared to 685 units in August, and only 395 in July.
