Technology Questions Loom Large for China's Plug-in Vehicle Battery Industry
China already produces most of the lithium-ion batteries that power our laptops and mobile phones. That would naturally translate into an ability to produce rechargeable electric vehicle batteries, right? Not so fast. A car battery is put under a lot more stress, than your laptop. And making an electric vehicle is harder than putting together a mobile phone.

As promised, I'm posting additional photos from our recent road review with the BYD F3DM plug-in hybrid. Also, Earl "ex-EV1-driver" Cox and I did a short video of our immediate reactions after driving the F3DM. Hopefully, these snapshots will provide small glimpses into the design and interesting features of what could be the first "Made in China" car in the United States.
First Drive: BYD F3DM Chinese Plug-in Hybrid Is the Real Deal
Last week, I had the unique opportunity to drive the BYD F3DM, on assignment for the New York Times. I believe that it’s the very first on-the-road review of what could be the first Made-in-China car in the U.S.A.—and it’s a plug-in hybrid. The review and related technical sidebar will run on Sunday in the paper’s auto section. I don’t want to out-scoop myself, but I can share a few observations and photos from the day.
