False Reports That BMW Plans to Lease, But Not Sell, Its 2013 Megacity Electric Car

In 2013, when BMW releases its full production electric car known now as “Megacity,” it will reflect a six-year project to rethink all aspects of the automobile—including the core vehicle structure and materials, manufacturing processes, and obviously the drivetrain. But it one key area—marketing—the Megacity might be more of a throwback than a bold move into the future. According to Automotive News, BMW will lease the vehicle rather than sell it—an approach that harkens back to the painful chapter of electric cars when General Motors snatched the EV1 from its leaseholders. Yet, inside sources tell us that the Automotive News is wrong.

A German auto enthusiast magazine reports the BMW Vision plug-in hybrid supercar has indeed been approved for production and is moving steadily towards that goal with an onsale date sometime in 2013.

Concerned about fast-charging that will allow EVs to fully replace internal combustion engine vehicles, German automakers are pushing for an upgraded connector plug that will accommodate Level 3 and future direct current (DC) charging.

BMW Teases Plug-in Hybrid Concept on 'DontBlogAboutThis.com' Website

Earlier this week, BMW launched a website called DontBlogAboutThis.com in a clear attempt to force the pictures and information on the website to go viral. Although it's not exactly a treasure trove of information, the site does show what appears to be an extension of the work BMW started with the Vision EfficientDynamics plug-in hybrid concept they unveiled last year.

A senior BMW executive last week told Edmunds.com that its 356-horsepower plug-in hybrid 2+2 concept sports car is headed for production in 2013. Only time will tell if the comment is backed by a real commitment from BMW. Regardless, the vehicle follows an emerging trend that the world’s fastest and most expensive sports vehicles will utilize some form of efficient electric-drive technology.
