Toyota Releases RAV4 EV Range and MPGe Figures

Toyota declared September 24, 2012, as the date the electric RAV4 EV will officially hit the streets of California. The automaker's most recent press release reveals that the RAV4 EV boasts a 103-mile range and a 76 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) combined rating. Toyota dealers will offer a 36-month lease option on the RAV4 EV and a low-interest purchase program will be available for qualified customers.

In my review of the Toyota RAV4 EV in The New York Times this Sunday, I told the story of how Toyota and Tesla came together to create the vehicle. Toyota and Tesla are very different companies, so the meeting of the minds is fascinating. Toyota: New RAV4 EV Is Most Practical, Versatile and Convenient EV

"It's the most practical, versatile and convenient electric vehicle on the market," said Bill Fay, group vice president of US Toyota-brand sales. Fay is referring to the RAV4 EV, which starts to arrive at dealerships in California in approximately one month. Of course, the question is not how practical and convenient the RAV4 EV is compared to other electric vehicles. It's how the RAV4 EV stacks up with its gas-powered sibling on range and price.

Though deliveries aren't scheduled to begin until late summer 2012, several Toyota dealerships in California are getting the jump on the competition by either creating a waiting list or taking deposits for the soon-to-be-released RAV4 EV.

Leviton Unveils 40-Amp, 6-Hour Charger for Toyota RAV4 EV

Leviton engineered a 240-volt, 40 amp charger for the upcoming Toyota RAV4 EV. Leviton's powerful setup is capable of outputting 9.6 kW and thus can charge a depleted Toyota RAV4 EV in approximately six hours.

Toyota Prices RAV4 EV at $49,800, Dials Down Regen Braking

Toyota announced this week that its upcoming RAV4 EV, featuring a powertrain co-developed by Tesla Motors, will sell "fully-equipped" for $49,800. Company officials also told me that the regen braking will have a much milder feel than the prototype I drove last year.

Toyota Confirms Limited Production of Electric RAV4 and Scion iQ in 2012

Toyota's chief executive confirmed last week that electric versions of the Scion iQ and the Toyota RAV4 will enter the production cycle in 2012. The two electric vehicles have been promised for a couple of years, so hitting the delivery dates on time is good news. The bad news is how tentative the production numbers will be.

Chevy Spark Electric Minicar Designed for California Emissions Compliance

General Motors confirmed yesterday it will make an all-electric minicar called the Chevy Spark, to debut in 2013. While more product choice of electric cars is a positive step for the market, EV advocates worry that another small limited-range and potentially underpowered electric car will fuel negative stereotypes about electric vehicles. They wonder why the Spark was selected as the company's first all-electric model since the ill-fated EV1, when GM is capable of producing a much more appealing and exciting electric vehicle.
