Winner of the funkiest EV design award, the Aptera 2e (formerly Type-1), looks like a cross between a motorcycle and ultralight single-occupant airplane. Built near San Diego, the Aptera 2e is competing in the Automotive X Prize competition. Thousands of potential buyers paid a $500 refundable deposit in anticipation of production scheduled for late 2008, and then delayed a few more times. Only time will tell if the company can deliver to its loyal fans.

Aptera Awaits Government Loan Decision, Says More Capital Still Needed to Make Vehicle

Aptera says it needs more money in order to set up a manufacturing process capable of producing at volume—which makes all the difference in the world when it comes to getting prices down to a point that could make a vehicle competitive. The new funding could come from a large, surprise investment from a private source, but most likely the startup will have to rely on the federal government to approve a $180 million loan request.
